Care for Tongue Piercing

By Armen Siran at 2010-11-29 00:06:20
Tongue piercing is a common sight these days among the radically trendy groups. However, it's still not an acceptable wear in formal circumstances and conventional environments. A staff sporting a tongue barbell normally doesn't go down well with the management unless he's working in a piercing studio or tattoo parlor. This form of piercing originated from some ancient cultures associated with religious rituals.

One type of piercing that is getting more and more popular today is the tongue piercing. This is a contemporary styles of piercing and today you'll see many rockers and college students going with this type of piercing. Of course you should take the time to give it some consideration before you decide that a tongue piercing is right for you, but once you do decide you're going to go for it, there are several things you are going to want to know about this type of piercing before you get it done.

In the case of tongue piercing, as an example, people may see that someone lost feeling in their tongue because of a botched piercing. A while later, they read that someone had a brain abscess, most likely caused from a tongue piercing. One thing leads to another, and the public comes to the conclusion that these piercings are very dangerous to get, and certainly outweigh any reason to get one. For most people it ends there.

After you have selected a location at which you will have your tongue pierced, select a date that works for both you and the person doing the procedure. Make sure you will not be giving any big speeches or participating in any important functions for about a week after the procedure as your tongue will more than likely swell and make talking - and eating - difficult. On that note, be sure to eat a good meal before you go to have the procedure done, you may be living on soup and milkshakes for a few days after the procedure is complete.

Your mouth has enzymes which naturally fight off bacteria so experiencing an infection from a tongue piercing is rare. In fact, more harm can be done to a new piercing by using too much of the mouthwash recommended. All that swishing could kill some of the useful natural enzymes in your mouth!

After removing the tongue jewelery out, make it a point to place an ice on the tongue where the hole is located. Do this on and off for every half an hour. This may be a bit tiring but believe me; this can surely help reduce the swelling of the infected area. Moreover, if you cannot keep up the half an hour placement of ice on the infected area, try another way by chewing on some ice chips.

Dentists see many cases of infection caused by complications that this fad causes. Because the mouth hosts a high concentration of bacteria, the period immediately following a piercing is a high risk time for infection. Swelling of the tongue is the most common immediate obstacle associated with the practice. In some cases, a swollen tongue can restrict breathing, and in rare and potentially fatal cases bacteria can enter the blood stream through the insertion site infecting the heart.

As a result of the tongue's exceptional healing ability, a tongue piercing will usually close rapidly. Some piercings will close up in a few hours while other holes that have been stretched larger may take a few days to close. The amount of time it takes for a piercing to heal differs greatly from one person to another. There are some people who have piercings that have larger stretched holes that are able to fit jewelry in their piercing sometimes after years.

Among all the type of body piercings known today, no other has gained such a controversial reputation other than the one that tongue piercing has. You can find hundreds of search results by simply doing a Google search regarding it which mostly defines it to be just as risky as Russian roulette. You are likely to find various unpleasant stories about tongue piercing being the cause of permanent nerve damage, brain abscess and HIV infection.
