At one time, it was established that hygienic cleanings should be done once every six months. This has become the standard that everyone is familiar with. After this standard was established, it came to light that a six month schedule may work for preventing cavities but three months is better for maintaining gum health.

Mouthwash or mouth rinse is a product used for oral hygiene. Mouthwashes and rinses can actually cover up smells which might indicate dental problems which need to be addressed. Antiseptic and anti-plaque mouth rinse claims to kill the germs that cause plaque, gingivitis, and bad breath. In most cases an antiseptic mouthwash is primarily cosmetic, unless it is prescribed by a dentist, meaning that the formula will be stronger and more effective.

Popular mouthwashes like Listerine and its generic equivalents contain essential oils that are antibacterial in nature, kill germs, and help prevent or eliminate gingivitis. As stated above, these mouthwashes can be used in gum disease treatment and can be purchased over the counter. For best results, they should be used twice a day, usually, since they don't have what's called substantivity.

Gingivitis is a disease of the gums caused by bacterial plaque that accumulates between the gums and the teeth. The bacteria produce toxins that cause inflammation of the gums around the teeth. Over time this inflammation can create deep pockets between the teeth and gums. In severe cases it leads to loss of the bone around the teeth. This condition is called periodontitis, and it is even more serious than gingivitis.

Possible contributing factors- A couple of factors have been identified as possibly contributing to the development of Gingivitis. The factors include bad oral hygiene, lack of nutrients, tobacco, hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, menstruation and menopause, medication, diabetes, AIDS and stress. Scientific studies have revealed that men have a greater risk of developing gum disease.

Females, due to hormones, will be at a higher risk than other groups of getting gingivitis. People who suffer from diabetes or Down syndrome are also at a higher risk when it comes to gingivitis. Stress can be another huge factor when it comes to gum disease and gingivitis.

Some symptoms of gum disease include bleeding gums that tend to occur while brushing or flossing. Other reasons a person might get bleeding and swollen gums is from the use of tobacco products or because of a poor diet. If you have these symptoms, then it is a good idea to bring them up to your dentist on your next visit so the problem can be treated immediately.
